Join BU Professor Erin Murphy to learn more about English author and poet John Milton and his understanding of liberty in a time of political upheaval.
Bust Buddies: Join our three-part series to learn about some old library friends: the three busts in our Rotunda! Part of Dedham Reads 2025.
John Milton is best known as the author of the epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667/1674), about Satan's rebellion against God, and the Fall of Adam and Eve. But Milton was also a political revolutionary, who published Paradise Lost after his revolution had failed. In the face of political defeat and personal despair, he turns to poetry to rethink what it means to be free. Through the rich characters of Satan, Adam, and Eve, his poem considers issues of liberty in relation to government, gender, and religion together. This talk will explore what it looks like when a great literary and political thinker grapples with the contradictions of his own world views and the challenges of being a human, leaving his readers with both a powerful story and a testament to the importance of deep thinking.
